TAMAKI YOSHIDA

Tamaki Yoshida

Visual Artist

Through the mirror of wildlife and nature, I observe the presence of human beings and their activities projected within them. The primary focus of my creative work is not merely the documentation of the beauty found in the natural world. Instead, I observe how human life, thought, and emotion are reflected in our interactions with other living beings, seeking to re-examine the structures of modern society and the essence of human existence through the fragments of these relationships. Rather than discussing environmental issues as distant, objective phenomena, my work is an attempt to focus on the "subtle connections" that lie hidden within our daily lives and are often overlooked.
In recent projects, I have developed works such as a series expressing the seamless relationship between daily life and wildlife management through film processing with domestic wastewater; an exploration of roadkill using daguerreotypes to capture life-sized images of animals killed in accidents; and projects that inherit the memories and history of the land using handmade Japanese paper (washi) embedded with local materials. My work has been exhibited at major international venues, including the KYOTOGRAPHIE International Photography Festival Main Program and the Rencontres d'Arles Associate Program.
To weave visual narratives of humans and nature, I pursue expression by selecting diverse methods—ranging from digital and film to experimental and historical printing techniques—depending on the underlying concept. These activities go beyond the mere documentation of tragedy; by bringing unconscious human behaviors and thought patterns to light, they continue to explore the possibility of finding a "new equilibrium" between humanity and the natural world.
